Understanding Solar Production vs. Energy Consumption

June 12, 2026

When you go solar with Palmetto, understanding how your solar system works is key to maximizing its benefits. Two important terms to know are solar production and energy consumption.

What is solar production?

Solar production is the amount of electricity your solar panels generate from sunlight. This production varies throughout the day and across seasons, driven by factors such as weather conditions. You can monitor your system's daily production and track how much energy it generates over time in your Palmetto account or mobile app.

Seasonal and weather-related factors can significantly impact solar production. For instance, shorter days and lower sun angles during winter reduce solar generation, while freezing temperatures or snow can temporarily halt production as the system protects itself by idling. Additionally, solar panels do not generate electricity at night, so any energy used during these hours comes from the grid, which can increase reliance on utility power.

What is energy consumption?

Energy consumption is the amount of electricity your home uses. This includes power drawn from your solar system and the utility grid when solar production isn't enough to meet your needs. Your appliances, lighting, HVAC systems, and electronics all contribute to your overall energy consumption.

If your solar system is newly activated, it may require a ramp-up period before you can fairly assess its performance. During this time, it's normal to see variations in production and usage.

Your total energy usage can be calculated as:

Your total energy usage = (Total Solar Production) + (Energy Grid Consumption) - (Solar Energy Sent Back to Grid)

How do production and consumption work together?

A note on your utility bill

It's important to know that your utility bill often does not show your system's total solar production. Utility meters primarily record what is delivered from the grid to your home and what is exported from your solar system to the grid. To see the true amount of electricity your panels have produced, you should check your Palmetto Dashboard.

How to optimize your energy usage

By understanding the difference between solar production and energy consumption, you can take control of your energy usage and maximize your solar savings!
